Doors, fronts and worktops - or an honest no

Replacement kitchen doors and makeovers

Not every kitchen needs replacing. If the carcasses are sound and the layout works, new doors, drawer fronts, handles and a new worktop can transform a room for a fraction of the cost. If they are not sound, we will tell you that too rather than sell you a makeover that will not last.

Find out if a makeover is worth it

Send a few photos of the kitchen, including one with a cupboard door open, and rough measurements. We will tell you honestly whether new doors and a worktop will do the job, and what each option costs.

When new doors are the right answer

If the carcasses are solid, square and not water damaged, the hinges and runners still work, and you are happy with where everything sits, then replacing doors, drawer fronts, handles and worktops gives you most of the visual change for a small share of the cost. Adding a Quooker tap and a new sink at the same time usually finishes it off.

This tends to work best on kitchens roughly ten to twenty years old that were reasonably specified when they were built, and on rental or resale properties where the goal is presentation rather than a twenty-year kitchen.

When it is not worth it

Chipboard carcasses that have swollen at the base, hinges pulling out of the side panels, a layout that has never worked, or a room where you want to move the sink or hob - none of those are fixed by new doors. Spending several thousand pounds on fronts bolted to failing boxes is money wasted, and we would rather say so.

In those cases we will quote a full replacement instead, in either Impuls German cabinetry or our own handmade line, and set the two figures side by side so you can decide with real numbers rather than a sales pitch.

Worktop-only replacement

Replacing just the worktop is one of the highest-impact changes available. Dekton and Silestone give you a hard-wearing stone-look surface, Corian allows seamless joints and integrated sinks, and Systemo offers a slim, contemporary profile.

We template after checking the existing cabinetry is level and sound, fit the new surface, and can include a new sink, tap and upstand or splashback in the same visit. Where the existing units are not level, that gets corrected first.

What a makeover can include

  • Replacement doors and drawer fronts
  • New handles or a switch to handleless profiles where the carcass allows
  • New worktops in Dekton, Silestone, Corian, Systemo, stone or timber
  • New sink and Quooker or standard tap
  • Replacement hinges, runners and internal fittings
  • Upstands, splashbacks and end panels
  • Appliance replacement and commissioning
  • Making good and decoration afterwards

Signs you need a full replacement

  • Swollen or crumbling carcass bases, usually under the sink
  • Hinges or runners pulling out of the cabinet sides
  • Doors that no longer line up however they are adjusted
  • A layout that does not work for how you cook
  • Wanting to move the sink, hob or appliances
  • Non-standard old cabinet sizes that no current door fits

Common questions

Can you replace kitchen doors on any kitchen?
Not always. Older kitchens often use cabinet sizes that no current door range fits, and damaged carcasses will not hold new doors properly. We check that from photos and a survey before quoting.
How much cheaper is a makeover than a new kitchen?
It varies with how much you change, but doors, fronts, handles and a worktop typically cost a fraction of a full replacement. We quote both so you can compare real figures for your room.
Can I just have new worktops fitted?
Yes. Worktop-only replacement is common, and we can add a new sink and tap at the same time. The existing cabinetry needs to be sound and level, which we check first.
Will you tell me if a makeover is a bad idea?
Yes, plainly. We would rather lose a small job than fit new fronts onto cabinets that will fail in two years.
Do you cover makeovers across Scotland?
Doors, fronts and worktop work are handled across mainland Scotland, though for smaller jobs at distance we will be honest about whether travel makes it worthwhile.
